BERLIN CON AWARDS
There are many board game awards, but who really honours the people behind the boxes, to whom we owe all the great games?
The Berlin Con Awards are a tribute to the work of those who make our hobby possible, the authors, as well as the publishers and their editors. In particular we want to draw the attention to the next generation. Our hobby is growing dynamically and every year many new authors and publishers succeed in publishing fantastic games that advance crucial innovations.
Therefore, the Berlin Con Awards 2019 will be awarded in four categories:
- Designer of the Year
- Publisher of the Year
- Best New Designer
- Best New Publisher
The Berlin Con Awards are chosen by an international jury consisting of board game bloggers. For each category, the jury nominates 4 persons or teams for one or more of their board games. All games that were published in 2018 or 2019 according to the website “boardgamegeek.com” are eligible. The respective winners will then be determined by secret ballot and announced on the opening evening of the Berlin Con.
The nominees for the Berlin Con Awards 2019 are:
Designer of the Year 2019
Detective – A Modern Crime Board Game
In 2019 the jury will consist of:
Peter Dringautzki - Vorsitzender
Peat & Alex
Hunter & Cron

Designer of the Year
Who will be nominated?
Four authors or publishers are nominated in each category. Authors and publishers are nominated for one or more games published in the current or previous year in any country or language. The reference is the year given by www.bordgamegeek.com. If in doubt the jury will decide at its own discretion.
How is the jury composed?
The international jury consists of 7 board game bloggers. One jury member assumes the position of chairman.
How is the jury appointed?
The chairman of the jury is appointed by the Berlin Board Game Con for a period of 5 years – an extension is possible. The remaining members of the jury are appointed by the Berlin Board Game Con for one year upon proposal of the chairman – an extension or a repeated appointment is possible.
What tasks does the chairman take on?
The chairman is responsible for the internal communication of the jury members. He represents the jury externally to the organizer of the Berlin Board Game Con and to the public. The Chairman leads the proposal discussion and conducts the internal primaries for the nominations.
How does the election work?
The jury will draw up a list of proposals from which 4 nominees for each category will be determined by a secret ballot.
Out of the 4 nominees the winners will be chosen by a secret ballot.
In case of a tie, the chairman’s vote decides, if the tie is still not broken, a second secret ballot will resolve the tie.
Which persons are honored with the awards for publishers?
With the Award for Best New Publisher and Publisher of the Year, we want to honor the publishers and editors who have done the significant work to make the relevant games a reality. We ask the publishers who is eligible for this. However, the recipient of the award in this case is the publisher as a company.
Will there be more categories in the future?
We do not rule it out, but for now we want to see how the premiere is going to be received.
Will the jury become even more international and more female in the future?
We are aiming for greater internationality and hope for more women in the jury, however women are unfortunately still a minority among the board game bloggers. It is also conceivable to enlarge the jury in the future.
Why another board game award?
With the Berlin Con Awards we want to break new ground in two decisive ways. For one thing, the prize is an award for people not for boxes. On the other hand, the award ceremony takes place in the context of a public event, which is open to any board game fan – as long as he or she can get hold of one of the limited tickets. It is important to us to bring creators and the players in one place to celebrate our hobby together.
